As the young man, Sherwin, arrives in rural Maine, he is met with hostility and resentment from his mother-in-law, Lucinda. She blames him for her daughter's death and is struggling to come to terms with her own guilt and sense of loss. Despite this initial tension, Sherwin is determined to seek closure and understand what led to his wife's death.
As Sherwin spends more time with Lucinda, he begins to learn more about his wife's past and the strained relationship she had with her mother. Through their shared grief and pain, Sherwin and Lucinda slowly find a way to connect and support each other in their healing process. They both come to realize that their grief is intertwined and that they must learn to forgive themselves and each other in order to move forward.
