Cargo is a post-apocalyptic thriller film set in the Australian outback. The movie follows a father, named Andy, who must find a way to protect his infant daughter after he becomes infected with a virus that turns him into a zombie. Andy has 48 hours before he fully transforms and he uses that time to seek out a safe place for his daughter to be cared for once he dies.
Along the way, Andy meets a young Indigenous girl named Thoomi who decides to help him. Thoomi is trying to save her own dad from the virus, while also following the traditions of her people and avoiding the undead. The two embark on a journey through the desolate landscape, where they must navigate through hostile territory and avoid the dangers that lurk around every corner.
Through their journey, the film explores themes such as societal constructs and what it means to be human. It also highlights the importance of preserving Indigenous culture and the knowledge it can offer in times of crisis.
Cargo stars Martin Freeman as Andy, Simone Landers as Thoomi, and Anthony Hayes as Vic, a volatile survivor who crosses paths with Andy and Thoomi. The film premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2017 and was later released on Netflix in May 2018.
