The Island of Lies is a historical drama film based on true events that took place in 1921. The film is set in Galicia, northern Spain, and follows the story of three island women, María, Josefa, and Cipriana, who set sail in a small skiff to rescue the passengers of a sinking steamship, Santa Isabel.

At the time, the ship was carrying over two hundred emigrants who were en route to Argentina. The three women, who were fishermen's wives, showed immense courage and resourcefulness in navigating the dangerous waters to reach the wreck site and save as many people as possible.

The authorities hailed the women as heroes, and they were celebrated in the media. However, a tenacious Argentinean journalist named León begins to investigate the incident and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye.

As León continues to dig deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption, lies, and deceit that implicates the local authorities and the ship's owners. Although many of the survivors praise the bravery of the three women, León's inquiries reveal that they were initially ignored and even ridiculed by those in power.

The Island of Lies is a powerful and thought-provoking film that sheds light on a little-known piece of history. It explores themes of heroism, sacrifice, and justice while examining the complex relationships between ordinary people and those in positions of authority. The film is directed by Paula Cons and stars Nerea Barros, Aitor Luna, and Victoria Teijeiro.
